Bio

For most of his life Chuck Phillips has been playing popular rock tunes, live, on stages across Eastern North Carolina.  Originally from the small waterfront community of Washington, NC, Chuck has been following his passion for singing, playing and writing music for more than 20 years.

His love of music most memorably began around age 5 when his maternal grandmother passed down her old Beatles records, straight from the depths of her dusty attic. A star was born: he immediately began imitating the Fab Four, along with Huey Lewis who he had also idolized, wide-eyed, on TV over and over again. At age 13 he was given his first guitar, an old Spanish-style classical beauty also found amongst the thrift store that was the attic. This new guitar sparked the inspiration for his first band, ‘The Stickmen’, who wrote their own songs and played with as much teenage angst as they could muster. Chuck took only a few guitar lessons and ran with them, teaching himself to play six other instruments by simply relying on his sharp ear and the musical electricity coursing through his veins; he’s never been able to read music and it certainly hasn’t hindered him.  The formation of other bands followed along the way as well as many solo performances on stages from New York to England, Holland, The Bahamas and beyond.

Fast forward to 2008, when Chuck released his first album of original music titled ‘In Progress’. The album was comprised of 11 original songs, with all instruments played by Chuck himself, recorded in his own home studio.  2013 brought another band of hometown heartbreakers formed out of Eastern North Carolina and known affectionately as Caps; they quickly became one of the most popular bands in the area. All this time, Chuck has continued to quietly write his own songs, which have now culminated in the recent release of his 2018 album, ’Tragic Beauty’.  The 6 song EP was recorded and produced by Oscar- and Grammy-winning, Emmy-nominated producer Robert L. Smith in New York City. Upon its release in November 2018 the Indie Music Blog website “Divide and Conquer’ gave the EP 4 out of 5 stars stating, 'The EP is very polished with exceptional production value. Furthermore, Phillips is a talented songwriter with an appealing voice. The songs don’t seem to push past age old tropes but that doesn't need to always happen. Recommended.’

The album is available now on all streaming platforms and features the single, "Ship Goes Down' which was pulled by Reverb Nation Senior Curators for inclusion on their 'Singer Songwriters You Need To Know' Playlist as well as a feature position on their homepage.  In February 2018 The NC Radio Station, 106.5 WSFL included Chuck and 'Ship Goes Down' on their Homegrown Radio Show which features up and coming North Carolina artists.

Currently Chuck plays across all of Eastern NC both solo and with this trio, The Chuck Phillips Band.  In addition to performing he hosts a podcast called BOCO Town / Washington City Limits, featuring local NC artists who write original music.  He also runs a home studio producing tracks for other artists.

'Act I: Scene II', Chuck's first full length album of original music was released on April 23rd to glowing reviews.
