Chuck Phillips is a North Carolina singer-songwriter, guitarist, drummer, and recording artist whose music draws from more than 20 years of professional performance experience. A native of the small waterfront community of Washington, North Carolina, Chuck has spent much of his life writing songs, recording music, and performing on stages throughout Eastern North Carolina and beyond.

His love of music began around the age of five, when his grandmother passed down a collection of Beatles records discovered in her attic. Chuck was immediately captivated, imitating the Fab Four—and Huey Lewis, another early favorite—whenever the opportunity arose. At 13, he received his first guitar, an old Spanish-style classical instrument found in that same attic. Before long, he had formed his first band, The Stickmen, writing original songs and playing them with all the teenage angst they could muster.

After only a handful of formal guitar lessons, Chuck largely taught himself to play by ear, eventually learning six additional instruments without ever learning to read music. That instinctive and versatile approach has remained at the heart of his musical life, taking him from hometown stages to performances in New York, England, Holland, The Bahamas, and elsewhere.

Chuck made his recording debut with the 2018 EP Tragic Beauty. The six-song collection was recorded in New York City and produced by Oscar- and Grammy-winning, Emmy-nominated producer Robert L. Smith. Its single “Ship Goes Down” was selected by ReverbNation’s senior curators for the “Singer-Songwriters You Need to Know” playlist and received a featured position on the platform’s homepage. The song was also featured on 106.5 WSFL’s Homegrown radio program.

Chuck later released the full-length album Act I: Scene II, continuing a body of work shaped by classic songwriting, thoughtful lyrics, and influences ranging from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and Tom Petty to Leonard Cohen, Coldplay, and Counting Crows.

Along the way, Chuck has collected more than a few memorable stories: he has performed with legendary drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, shared a drink with Mick Jagger in the California desert, enjoyed a cheeseburger in paradise with Jimmy Buffett, and become close friends with Scottish folk-rock hero Al Stewart.

Today, Chuck performs an eclectic mix of original music, classic rock, singer-songwriter favorites, and familiar crowd-pleasers as a solo artist, alongside J.B. Mayes as Chuck & JB, and in a trio configuration featuring percussion. He is also the drummer for Vrolet Sun, a full-band project that gives him another outlet for his musical versatility.

Chuck’s work extends beyond the stage. From his home recording studio in Washington, he records and produces music for himself and other artists, bringing the same ear for songwriting, arrangement, and performance to the other side of the microphone.
